structures  of  debate  in  English,  to  become  able  to  view  and  formulate  arguments

Contents
In this course, we will practice both formal and informal debates. In formal debates,
one team takes the “for” position, and the other team takes the “against” position.
Sometimes  you  may  not  actually  agree  with  the  position  your  team  is  taking,  but
you will have  to  argue  that position  in  order  to  persuade  those  listening  that you
are  right.  In  informal  debates,  two  students  with  differing  opinions  on  a  subject
argue their ideas and try to convince the other person that their position has merit.
Sometimes  the  purpose  is  not  to  change  the  other  person’s  mind,  but  simply  to
express your own views on a subject.

We  will  focus  on  and  develop  the  essential skills  through  discussions  of
controversial issues from a textbook.
