One way to understand the cultural nature of communication is to look at psychological problems in which normal modes of communication have broken down. In this class we will focus on problems such as hikikomori, school refusal, bullying, Internet addiction, stress symptoms such as katakori, and suicide. How do these symptoms reflect Japanese premises of selfhood and interpersonal relations? Students are expected to participate actively in class discussion. The language of instruction will be English.
