Course
Objectives
The advanced skills-based course aims to prepare students for transition into an international academic environment. Students will primarily focus on academic skills, developing necessary reading and writing techniques and strategies so that they may apply them in the fall semester Project English course, or later on at a college or university abroad.

Course
Contents
Essentially for reading skills the course may cover the basics such as previewing texts, predicting information and skimming and scanning depending on the students’ needs and abilities. Students then may be made to develop a greater understanding of expository text structures such as determining main ideas and text organization, identifying word-level cues while refining ‘reading to study’ capabilities such as effective note taking and critical reading. For writing, particular paragraph and essay formats could be introduced again depending on the students’ needs and background disciplines. Specific academic writing goals may include correct referencing, citations, paraphrasing and quotations as well as the introduction to various essay genres. Students are encouraged to carry out authentic academic research and writing, while also being made aware of avoiding plagiarism to meet with foreign educational standards. Students will also learn basic presentation skills including techniques for both organizing and giving presentations.
