Course
Objectives
1) Students will become familiar with common themes regarding the representation of gender and sexuality in the media.
2) Students will develop an understanding of how cultural norms related to gender and sexuality are constructed, maintained, and challenged through various media and one’s communication with them.
3) Students will develop the ability to critically analyze and discuss key issues in gender and sexuality studies.

Course
Contents
Seminar is a small, discussion-based course in which students complete assigned readings prior to each session and discuss them in the classroom. In this seminar, we will explore key concepts/theories in gender and sexuality studies. Through/Using a variety of theoretical perspectives, we will critically examine representations of gender and sexuality in the media (e.g., magazine, television, film, music video, social media). Specific topics/concepts/theories covered will include feminisms, masculinities, queer theory, sexualities, psychoanalysis, sex work, sexual harassment, and sexting.
 
Note: Some of the topics/images discussed/shown in class may be highly sensitive and sexually explicit. If you have any issues with such matters, please do not register for this seminar.
