Objectives
In this course students are introduced to concepts and subjects concerning cultural studies. Students are asked to examine cultural theory and critical issues, thereby familiarizing themselves with the conceptual tools to better understand popular culture, identity, class, and power dynamics in contemporary societies.

This is a discussion-oriented course, in which students are expected to read academic book chapters, write concept definitions, present individually/as a group, and actively discuss theoretical concepts, observations, and opinions every week.

3. Culturalism (Hoggart, Williams, Thompson, Hall) 
4. Marxisms (Classical, Frankfurt School, Althusserianism, hegemony, post-Marxism)  
5. Structuralism and post-structuralism (Saussure, Levi-Strauss, Barthes, Derrida, Foucault) 
6. Gender and sexuality (Feminisms, post-feminism, masculinities, queer theory) 
7. ‘Race’, racism and representation (‘Race’ and racism, orientalism, whiteness, anti-racism) 
8. Postmodernism (Baudrillard, Jameson, pluralism of value, global postmodern, convergence) 
9. Class, materiality, global popular culture 
10. Politics of popular culture & post-Marxist cultural studies

Students need to complete assigned readings & submit short concept definitions prior to each class. Students will explore at least one key concept section per week by writing a short definition based on the assigned readings and need to prepare several presentations.
