Objectives
The objective of this course is for the students to “translate” their skills acquired in classroom learning into practice in real life settings and to understand the practical challenges faced by professional translators and interpreters so that they can develop problem-solving skills based on experience.

Students are also expected to become aware of the codes of ethics for translators and interpreters and learn how to deal with clients and manage projects. They will be required to reflect on their activities by producing journals and reports.

Course
Contents
This course provides students with firsthand experience in translation and interpreting by taking part in authentic projects on campus and in the local community.

On the first day of class, students will learn about the objective of this course as well as the necessary skillsets and the professional mindset they need to acquire by taking part in the practicum. They will also be introduced to the various opportunities made available to them through Rikkyo Community Language Service (RiCoLaS), internships, part-time jobs and by other means. Based on these understandings and advice from the instructor, students will come up with their own plans for their individual projects.

Students are required to keep a record of their activities in a journal during the course of the semester. This journal will serve as the basis for their final report. Students are expected to share its contents with the rest of the class when asked and to submit the final report at the end of the semester.
