Course
Objectives
Students will learn basic movements and various techniques of Judo with the goal of improving physical fitness and promoting health. Further, students will deepen the understanding of Japanese Budo and its characteristic ideas and philosophy from different viewpoints.

Course
Contents
This course will focus on practicing basic movements and a great variety of techniques and forms in Judo to improve overall physical fitness and promote health. Further, the students will learn about the history of Judo and how Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, developed Judo as a physical, mental and moral pedagogy in Japan. In addition, a comparison with foreign practitioners will introduce how Judo evolved into a combat and Olympic sport nowadays, and students will discuss differences and similarities between Japanese and foreign Judo. Instruction for this course will be conducted in English. (The "Course Schedule" shows the main topics/contents for this course, but not necessarily the order dealt with in class.)

5. Japanese vs Foreign Judo: Budo vs Sport?! 
6. Basic movements, etiquette & Ukemi (break-fall techniques) 
7. Ne-waza (groundwork techniques): (1) holding techniques 
8. Ne-waza (groundwork techniques): (2) strangle holds & (3) joint techniques 
9. Tachi-waza (standing techniques): (1) foot & leg techniques 
10. Tachi-waza (standing techniques): (2) hand techniques

Judo course for beginners (experience in Judo not required). Judogi (Judo wear) provided for class.
Students must complete a medical examination. Attendance in "Guidance" required for medical examination check and selection of Judogi size. Hand in a passport photo (size: 3cm x 4cm) at "Guidance".
A part of the theoretical study classes could be possibly held as online classes using the video conferencing system "Zoom".

Notice

・授業形態:「対面」

1.担当教員より特別の指示のない限り、更衣はポール・ラッシュ・アスレチックセンター(池袋キャンパス)/ 体育館(新座キャンパス)の更衣室で行うこと。なお、第1回目の授業より実習が始まるので、運動ができる服装・靴を準備し、授業に出席すること。屋内施設で行う授業は専用シューズを用意すること。

2.天候等により通常の実施場所とは異なる場合があるため、屋内・屋外科目に関わらず、授業前にポール・ラッシュ・アスレチックセンター入口(池袋キャンパス)/体育館入口(新座キャンパス)の掲示板で実施場所を確認すること。

3.4月に行われる定期健康診断を必ず受診しておくこと。

4. 感染対策には最大限配慮を行うが、完全に防ぐことはできないので、よく考えて受講すること
