Course
Objectives
This is an advanced course of the Conference Interpreter Training Program, designed to develop interpreter competencies identified by major international institutions. The objectives of the course are for students to a) hone skills for consecutive interpreting with systematic note-taking and simultaneous interpreting for speeches on topics that are typically dealt with by conference interpreters, b) hone skills for researching domain-specific topics, and c) become familiar with professional settings and requirements for conference interpreters. By the end of the course, students should be able to accurately interpret up to 15 minutes of speech on a technical topic in simultaneous mode.

Contents
Students engage in exercises for consecutive interpreting with systematic note-taking and simultaneous interpreting between English and Japanese for speeches on technical, business, and political topics. Students are expected to research the topics to be used in class and to submit reports on their in-class performance using appropriate metalanguage and theoretical references.

Students are required to read extensively and create bilingual glossaries of current events; to research the topic to be covered in the next class; to submit a report on in-class performance after class; and to submit a journal of interpreting practices (at least 10 hours a week, individually or in a group).
