Course Objectives

Iconography is an essential method for intellectually understanding not only Christian art but also Western art in general. Students will learn iconography and iconology in order to form the basis for researching into the works of art based on their own interests.

Course Contents

Iconography – literally "description of image (icon)" – is a method to study the content, allegory, and symbolism that images represent. The reason why this is an indispensable methodology for art history, along with style, is that the semantic usage of images, especially in the mythological and religious subjects, is closely related to composition, motif and attribute. Therefore, a typological investigation of iconography (composition and motifs) is essential in art historical research. In this class, we will focus not only on Christian iconography, but also on Greek mythological iconography, which is widely used in classical art, and consider the iconographical connections between Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modern classical art after Renaissance. Based on the lecture, students make presentations on works of art they are interested in.
