Course Objectives

From the early days of his activities to his later years, J.S. Bach produced church music almost uninterrupted, and at the center of it was the cantata played during worship. We will select a representative work from among them and consider the contextual connection between the church calendar and the service around the cantata, which is also called a “musical sermon.”
In addition, we will deepen our consideration of how the tradition of Lutheran church music is utilized in the works, using the usage of chorale as a clue.

Course Contents

First, the work will be explained, and while listening to examples of performance, the relationship with the church calendar, analysis of the piece, and use of the chorale will be examined. In doing so, we deepen our understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of Bach's cantatas. We will collect as many questions as possible using reaction papers and GoogleClassroom, and try to reply and discuss further.
