Course Objectives

This course aims to learn the significance of, method of, limit of history by examining problems and conflicts among the modern history of Japan.

Course Contents

This class will give an overview of Japanese history from the establishment of the Meiji government to the present day. This year, the course will focus on the theme of "I" and the changes in terms that broadly refer to people living in a country, such as "national," "people," and "citizens," as well as to terms that refer to individual people, such as "life," "self," and "individuals," while learning about who has continued to form Japan and what "I" means to live in that country.
