英語原文で文学（小説）を読むことに親しんでもらう。一語一句がもつ意味の重要性、物語構成の意義、同時代の文化社会背景との関係など、多角的な視点から小説を英語で丁寧に読むとはいかなることか理解してもらう。

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with reading literature (novels) in the original English language. The importance of the meaning of each word and phrase, the significance of the narrative structure, and the relationship with the contemporary cultural and social background of the novels will be discussed from various perspectives to help students understand what it means to carefully read a novel in English.

２０世紀のアメリカ小説を読み進め、その内容について議論する。扱う作品は英語原文でも比較的読みやすい２０世紀の小説を、新しい作品から時代をさかのぼる形で読んでいく予定。また１９世紀を代表する長編小説であるHarriet Beecher Stoweの『アンクルトムの小屋』について400字詰めで5枚から10枚程度の読書感想文を提出してもらう。感想文は添削して返却し、課題作品について議論する。

We will be reading 20th century novels that are relatively easy to read in their original English, starting with newer works and working backward in time. Students will also be asked to submit a book report (5-10 pages of 400 letters) on "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, one of the best-known American novels of the 19th century. The reports will be returned to the students with instructor's comments, and the assigned novel will be discussed in the classroom after the submission.
