Course Objectives

In this course, we will conduct a close reading of eighteenth-century English literature, with adequate investigations on its political, religious, and cultural background, in order to develop a proper understanding of text and context, which is essential for literary research.
The early eighteenth century was a golden age of satire in Britain. You can find a wide variety of abusive expressions in highbrow books as well as in lowbrow magazines. Such works richly reflect the social trends and the beliefs of their authors at the time, so you will find it rather interesting to appreciate and grasp what they really mean. We should like to explore the currents of thought and the views of the world that permeate between the lines.

Course Contents

We will read and discuss the poems of the renowned satirist Jonathan Swift, while delving into the historical background of early modern Britain. Proper preparation is essential, as students will be required to give a presentation in each class period. After the presentations, they must write a mini-report on their assigned sections and submit it in the following week.
