Course Objectives

This course will teach fundamental skills for literary research through reading British and Irish short stories. Texts will deal with the late 19th century and early 20th century literary works predating the second world war. By selecting works from a specific period and location (UK and Ireland), students will practice intensive reading with cultural and historical understandings of each work. Specifically, this course aims to offer insights into the periods, fin de siecle and Modernism through literature, photography, film, and other visual media.

Course Contents

Students will engage in debate regarding one literary work per week. The aim is to develop students' critical thinking skills through multifaceted discussions. Groups will be made of three to four students and each group will be assigned a literary work each week. Debate assignments will consist of the chair, affirmative, and negative. Debating differing positions allows students to experience a variety of interpretations and reading methods. Groups must conduct research on the assigned literary work before each class begins. Summarizing individual and group opinions is also important.
