Course Objectives

Students will acquire foundational knowledge of American literature (race, gender, history, etc.), as well as develop basic skills of literary analysis, such as close-reading, discussion, and academic writing.

Course Contents

American literature is essentially gothic. Americans, critics have commonly considered, create horror stories, driven by their awareness of historical sins, such as the genocide of Indigenous peoples, the violence of the Revolutionary War, and slavery. But is such a collective sense of guilt really the nucleus of American Gothic? In this course, we will pay attention to the pleasure and utility of gothic, to reconsider the American literary tradition. Students are required to submit response papers as well as to participate in discussions every week.
