Course Objectives

The purpose is to facilitate language learning -- listening, speaking, reading, writing -- through various class activities. The socio-historical background of each story will be explored to enrich the learning experience.

Course Contents

The three texts to read and discuss are Alfred Uhry's play Driving Miss Daisy, Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" and Raymond Carver's "Cathedral". Uhry's play focuses on a barrier-breaking friendship between a domineering Jewish woman and her black chauffeur. It also refers to historical figures or events that serve as a reminder of racism during the Civil Rights Movement in USA. The other short stories have disabled main characters, and their courage and dignity enables them to form true friendship with others. Students are expected to prepare the assigned reading, participate in class activities, write short comments, and give an oral presentation (2-5 minutes).
