本演習参加者は、本作りを実体験する。本作りのプロセスは、技術的な諸段階に分解でき、それらに習熟すれば、誰にでも本の製作は可能である。ただし、読者に納得感や充足感を与える本を作るには、原稿内容の深い理解が欠かせない。本演習の前半では、原稿への向き合い方を磨き、後半で、編集実務を実践する。原稿を読んで、出版の最終的なイメージを思い描けるようになることが目標である。

Participants will gain practical experience in book making. The process of making a book can be broken down into different technical stages, and anyone can produce a book if they are skilled in these steps. However, a thorough understanding of the content of the manuscript is essential to create a satisfying and fulfilling book for readers. In the first half of this semester you will refine your approach to the manuscript, and in the second half you will practice the editing process. Our goal is to be able to design the final image of the publication simply by reading the manuscript.

さまざまなタイプの本・雑誌を取り上げ、そこで採用されている編集方法を吟味する。執筆者の意図はどこにあるのか、対象読者は誰か、ふさわしい刊行形態はなにか、など編集に大きな違いが生じてくるポイントに意識を向けていく。また、書籍と雑誌の製作・編集プロセスは異なっており、その両方について学び、実践する。

We will look at different types of books and magazines, and then examine the editorial methods used. We will be aware of where editing can make a big difference, such as where the author's intentions lie, who the target audience is and what the appropriate publication format is. We will also learn and practice book and magazine publishing, which have different production processes.
