Course Objectives

In the 21st century, one of the major cultural trends covering the global world we live in developed from hip hop that started in New York in the 1970s. What political, economic, and cultural interests were associated with hip hop, which was thought to be a short-lived trend for young people, with its DJs who play other people's music and rappers who do not sing but rap rhythmically, and why did this culture go beyond its local culture and experience? In this course, we would like students to learn and deepen their understanding not only of music, videos, and literature, but also fashion, design, art and the characteristics of cultural expression on the inside and outside of the street that expand the area.

Course Contents

We will try to explore and understand from what political, social, and technical conditions and relationships between sender and receiver the culture of hip-hop, which tends to be stereotyped, was born and is enjoyed and consumed. In particular, we will take up rappers and DJs, in particular, and related street art/graffiti and (street) fashion as our subject matter. Some of the texts used will be in English, and students will require English skills up to compulsory education level.
