Course Objectives

1. To understand contemporary social issues related to life and death and the practice of thanatology in response to these issues.
2. To establish one's own attitude through mutual exchange of opinions on various contemporary philosophical problems.
3. To understand the significance of thinking about life and death on one's own, and to develop the ability to create and address questions on one's own.

Course Contents

Solving social problems that have arisen with the development of technology and globalization is an example of how philosophy and ethics can be a "useful discipline for the world" in the modern era.
However, solving social problems does not mean applying traditional values and universal ethical principles to reality and revealing the right attitudes, but rather considering how diverse individuals can guide their decisions in a reality where such criteria themselves cannot function, and creating an environment in which they can do so.
In this class we will review the practice of thanatology, which is an interdisciplinary approach to the various issues of life and death that have emerged as social problems of our time. In doing so, we will examine the significance of thinking about death in the modern age and cultivate each participant's ability to think about his or her own life and death.
