Course Objectives

Have you ever experienced the case in which your "dignity" is violated? We respect dignity especially when it is impaired. Then, what exactly is the dignity? Do animals or artificial intelligence have dignity? The goals of this courses are to obtain basic knowledge about the concept of the "dignity" in the history of ethics, to discuss matters further, and to write essays on the topics.

Course Contents

This course introduces the role that dignity plays and its meaning from the perspective of ethics. In the first half of the course, participants examine the arguments about the "dignity" in the basic ethics, from the ancient Greek philosophy to the modern ethics. In the last half of the course, participants learn the various arguments about the "dignity" in animal ethics, environmental ethics, bioethics and robot ethics.
