古今東西の幻想文学を扱いながら、人間の想像力の領域について文学作品を通して考察を行う。あわせて、言語学、文学、哲学、心理学、フォークロアなどの視点からフィクションの機能、恐怖という感情についての基本的な知見を獲得することを目指す。

The course will examine the realm of the human imagination through literary works, dealing with fantasy literature from all ages and cultures. In addition, the course aims to acquire basic knowledge about the function of fiction and the emotion of fear from the perspectives of linguistics, literature, philosophy, psychology, folklore, etc.

豊饒な幻想文学の文章に触れ、多種多様な世界の捉え方を学ぶ。トドロフらの定義を出発点にして、都市空間と文学の関係（プラハの事例）、絵画・遊び・石における想像力（カイヨワ）、幽霊の語り、恐怖の哲学、といった問題系を参照しながら、寓話的な文学言語の特性について考察する。主として文学作品を扱うが、映画などのアダプテーションも可能な限り参照し、メディア間の表現の差異についても随時検討する。

授業は基本的に講義形式で行うが、小説や映画を鑑賞したうえでの感想やコメントを発表してもらったり、グループディスカッションを行う予定である。

Students will be exposed to fertile fantasy literary texts and learn how to perceive a wide variety of worlds. Taking Todorov and others definition as a starting point, we will discuss the characteristics of allegorical literary language, referring to such problematic systems as the relationship between cities and literature (Prague), imagination in painting, play, and stone (Caillois), ghost narratives, and the philosophy of fear. The course will focus mainly on literary works, but will also refer to adaptations of films and other media as much as possible, and will examine the differences in expression between media as needed.

The class will basically be conducted in a lecture style, but we will have students present their impressions and comments after viewing novels and films, and we will also have group discussions.
