Course Objectives

- Students develop an understanding of the diverse roles of Japanese woodblock prints in their historical and cultural contexts
- Students become familiar with the visual analysis of Japanese woodblock prints
- Students acquire the ability to read and assess academic texts related to the field for conducting their own research

Course Contents

Woodblock prints were an essential part of the lives of people in early modern Japan. How did these prints impact people’s thoughts and understanding of their place in society? How did people engage with prints and for what purposes? This course examines prints, printed books and broadsheets, showing diverse subjects such as actors, foreigners, catfish and firefighters from the 17th to the 19th century. The course aims to highlight the social and cultural significance of prints while addressing their wider aesthetic development in early modern Japanese culture.
