【Course Objectives】

In the 2024 seminar, we discussed how religion influences politics in global society. While religion's influence on politics continues to grow, the nature of religion in contemporary society is undergoing significant changes. This is because the advancement of globalization has brought about a global information and consumer society, which has also impacted religion.

In this seminar, we will first learn basic concepts about religion in information and consumer society from D. Lyon and Hiroshi Yamanaka. Then, through individual papers included in Hiroshi Yamanaka's edited volume Contemporary Religion and the Spiritual Market (Kobundo, 2020), we will examine the relationship between consumerism and religion through case studies of power spots, pilgrimages, and festivals. We will also consider the impact of consumerism on traditional religious organizations and their worldviews, as well as the transformations they have undergone.

In this seminar, participants will select papers aligned with their interests, create summaries, and make presentations. Along with deepening our understanding of the relationship between consumerism and religion, we aim to develop accurate reading comprehension skills and research abilities necessary for participants to write their own reports and papers. Particularly in the spring semester, participants will submit two reflection papers as assignments. These papers are intended to demonstrate understanding of the assigned literature and to help participants develop their own research questions. In the fall semester, participants will select a case study of religion in consumer society based on their interests and conduct analysis and presentations.

【Course Contents】

At the end of the semester, each student will give a 15-minute research presentation. The presentation must be delivered from a complete manuscript. While the reading speed may vary, prepare approximately 4,000 Japanese characters (around 2,000 words in English) for the manuscript. Regarding content, while presentations must address the relationship between politics and religion, there are no restrictions on historical period, country, or cultural background.

Theoretically, students should analyze their chosen phenomena by drawing on papers read during the spring semester and organize their findings into a logical text. The presentation should follow a three-part structure:
The introduction should establish the problem and clarify the research questions to be addressed. The main body should explain the phenomena under study and discuss how politics and religion are related and how this relationship has changed. The conclusion should verify whether the questions posed in the introduction have been clearly answered.

A designated commentator will provide a 5-minute response to each presentation. While commentators are not required to prepare a complete manuscript, they must deliver well-thought-out comments. Additional time will be allocated for questions and discussion from other students.
