This course deals with the medieval Christian spirituality in the Low Countries. The spiritual tradition that flourished in the Middle Ages in this region (the present-day Flanders in northern Belgium and the Netherlands) inherited the Christian faith of the apostolic age, developed closely under the influence of the monasticism and the lives of the common folk, and subsequently had a great influence on the religiosity of modern Europeans. Despite its great significance in the history of European Christian thought, however, this tradition is little known in Japan compared to scholastic theology and other fields. This is probably due to the fact that this tradition is based on the devotion and sentiments of ordinary people: a different kind of “knowledge” as opposed to “academic knowledge” that can be conceptualized and communicated universally. This fact makes it, on the one hand, difficult to understand for us from other cultural backgrounds, yet, on the other hand, gives us a unique opportunity to encounter with the Christian culture at the level of “feeling”. This course aims thus (1) to introduce the medieval spirituality in the Low Countries; (2) to give an opportunity for students to deepen their approaches to Christianity based on their own interests and concerns; (3) to share skills in reading historical materials (ideally, rudimentary skills in reading the texts in original languages).
This course centers on the reading of selected texts from important authors in the medieval Low Countries. Japanese translation of the texts will be distributed. If there are requests, we will also read the texts in original languages (Latin and Dutch).

| オンラインですので主にパワーポイントを使って授業を進め、板書の使用は、耳慣れない言葉の確認などに限ります。基本的に講義形式の授業とし、ディスカッションや受講者からのプレゼンテーションなどはこちらからは予定していませんが、希望があれば応じます。また、授業中には自由に質問や意見をしてください。授業後の質問も教場で（オンライン上ですが）、もしくはメール等で随時受け付けます。 Mainly PowerPoint will be used during the class. The use of the board will be limited to checking unfamiliar words and phrases. We do not plan to hold discussions or presentations, unless there are requests. Students are free to ask questions and express their opinions during the class. Questions are welcome after class in the classroom (online) or by e-mail. |

この授業では、中世ネーデルラントの霊性思想を扱います。現在のベルギー北部フランドル地域およびオランダにまたがるこの地域で中世に興隆した霊性思想は、使徒の時代のキリスト教信仰を独自に受け継ぎ、修道院の伝統や民衆の生活とも密接に発展を遂げ、その後は近代ヨーロッパ人の宗教性に大きな影響を与えました。しかし、ヨーロッパのキリスト教思想史の中で重要な意義を有しているにもかかわらず、スコラ神学などに比べると、その成果は日本ではほとんど知られていません。それは、そこで表現されているのが、概念化されて普遍的に伝達可能な〈学知〉とは異なり、民衆の信心や感情に基づく別の種類の〈知〉であって、他の文化圏から理解するのが難しいためもあるでしょう。しかしだからこそ、〈こころ〉のレベルでヨーロッパのキリスト教文化に触れる機会をわたしたちに与えてくれるとも言えます。この授業では受講者に、（１）中世ネーデルラントの霊性思想に触れる機会を持ち、（２）キリスト教の霊性（土地の風土や民衆の生活に根差した宗教性）に対するアプローチの仕方を、それぞれの興味、関心から省み、（３）加えて思想資料読解のスキルを（理想的には原文読解の初歩的スキルを）身につけていただくことを目標とします。
