【Course Objectives】

William of Saint-Thierry was a 12th-century Benedictine monk (later a Cistercian monk). Born in present-day Belgium, he was active in France as a theologian and as the abbot of Saint-Thierry Abbey. His masterpiece, the Exposition on the Song of Songs, is said to have transformed medieval Europeans' image of Christian God from a “God of Judgment” to a “God of Love,” alongside the Sermons on the Song of Songs by his close friend, the great Cistercian monk Bernard of Clairvaux. During the transitional period from Romanesque to Gothic, this treatise contributed to Europeans breaking away from the influence of ancient cultures and acquiring a unique, new religiosity. In Japan, he remains largely overlooked in the shadow of Scholastic scholars like Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus. Yet understanding William or the tradition of monastic theology is crucial for gaining a deep understanding of European Christian culture.
In this seminar, we will read William's Exposition on the Song of Songs in its original Latin. Our objectives are to understand his thought, gain deeper insight into medieval European Christian culture, and cultivate the basic skill of reading original texts—a fundamental requirement for research in intellectual history or any field, be it social history or art history, that engages with primary sources. We try to read in a way that leaves no single word unexplained grammatically in Latin. Wherever there is any ambiguity in the ideas in the text, we discuss it rather than skipping over it. Consequently, our reading speed will be extremely slow, and we cannot foresee how much we can cover within the course period. This approach is the exact opposite of modern way of reading quickly and efficiently to grasp only the main points (though such reading is sometimes necessary for research, it is another skill). This approach may even seem backward in the age of AI, yet it will actually help to improving our AI literacy.

【Course Contents】

After brief explanations by the teacher on background topics such as medieval Christian history, the history of spirituality, monastic culture, etc., we will read William's Latin original of the Exposition on the Song of Songs, translating it line by line from the prologue (depending on the language learning background of the participants, we may use translations from English, French, German, etc.). Each session, one participant will be responsible for translating from the Latin, but all participants are expected to join in discussion. This practice of “reading the text together” also serves as an approach to the experience of medieval readers, who likely read in a similar manner. Necessary assistance for grammatical understanding will be provided by the teacher. In case any participant wishes to make a presentation related to his/her own research field during class, that request will be accommodated.

The one who assigned to the translation should study the text thoroughly, paying attention to grammatical details. Others should do so as well, to the extent possible. To “physically” grasp the sense of Latin language, I recommend copying the original text by hand and reading it aloud. (2 hours each).

【履修にあたって求められる能力 / Abilities Required to Take the Course】

ラテン語学習歴のあることが望ましいですが、それがない方の場合は、何語で書かれたものであれ原文読解という作業に興味や意欲のあること。また、何かに時間と手間をかけることに積極的な価値を見出せる方でないと、授業時間は苦痛なものになると思います。ギョームについて、あるいは中世思想史についての予備知識の有無は問いません。

Prior knowledge of Latin is desirable. For those without any knowledge of Latin, an interest in and motivation for reading primary sources, whatever language they may be written in, is still essential. For those who value efficiency and speed in acquiring knowledge above all else, class time will likely be unbearable. No prior knowledge of William or medieval intellectual history in general is required.
