The objectives of this course are (1) to have a general comprehensive understanding of the content of the four New Testament gospels, and (2) to understand the various major characteristics as well as narrative and theological themes and concepts of the gospels in light of their historical and ideological contexts.
The four gospels stand at the beginning of the New Testament, the second part of the Bible. They are stories about Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah/Christ. While these various gospels are united in that they depict Jesus as the Messiah/Christ awaited by Israel through their stories of the deeds and teaching of Jesus, each gospel has its own narrative structure, literary characteristics, and theological themes. This course will introduce the shared historical background and contents of the four New Testament gospels, observe the various characteristics and main themes of the gospels, and overview the content (Jesus’s deeds and teaching) in each of the gospels while observing their relationship to first-century Greco-Roman culture and Judaism, as well as how the Old Testament and Jewish traditions were interpreted about Jesus.

この授業科目の目標は（1）新約聖書の四福音書の内容について総合的に理解し、（2）それらのそれぞれの特徴や主要な物語的かつ神学的なテーマ及び概念を歴史背景及び思想的背景から理解する。

『聖書』の第二部『新約聖書』の冒頭には、合計４冊の「福音書」が収録されており、それらはメシア／キリストとしてのナザレのイエスについての物語である。イエスの行いと教えの物語を通してイスラエルが待ち望んでいたメシア／キリストとしてイエスを描写することということに関してはそれぞれの福音書は一致するが、各福音書はそれぞれの物語構成、文学的特徴、そして神学的なテーマがある。本科目は、紀元後1世紀のギリシア・ローマ文化と当時ユダヤ教との関係、そして福音書の中にどのように旧約聖書やユダヤ教の伝統がイエスについて解釈されたかを考察しつつ、新約聖書の四福音書が共通する歴史背景や内容の要素を紹介し、福音書のそれぞれの特徴や主要なテーマを考察し、各福音書の内容（イエスの行いと教え）を概観する。
