【Course Objectives】

The goal is to analyze the process of politicization of American evangelical Christianity and to understand the relationship between religion and politics in contemporary society.

【Course Contents】

Religion is an essential element in understanding U.S. politics. Among them, the conservative Protestant group "evangelicals" have arguably been a major driver of U.S. politics in recent years: in the 2016 presidential election, New York real estate magnate Donald Trump, who seemed to have little to do with religion, garnered 81% of the white evangelical vote, helping him win the election. Barely 21 years after his defeat, evangelicals remain Trump's most loyal supporters. This is despite the unprecedented indictment case he faces as a presidential candidate. Thus, they will be key in the 2024 presidential election. However, evangelicals have not always been influential in U.S. political history. It is said that these evangelicals first came to the forefront of U.S. politics in the late 1970s, and since then they have supported Reagan's conservative revolution, Bush's war in Iraq, and Trump's Middle East policies. In doing so, evangelicals became progressively politicized and, in turn, U.S. politics became religious. This lecture clarifies the process of the politicization of evangelicals since the 1970s by carefully reading their ideology, or theology, as well as the social conditions and religious culture behind it.
