The objectives of this course are (1) to have a general comprehensive understanding of the content of the Gospel of Matthew, (2) to understand the major narrative and theological themes and concepts of the Gospel of Matthew in light of their historical and ideological contexts, and (3) to conduct research on a text or theme from the Gospel of Matthew.
Through its narration of the acts and teaching of Jesus, the Gospel of Matthew presents a complex picture of Jesus as Israel’s anticipated Messiah and the savior who brings the Kingdom of God for all peoples. As the second longest Gospel, one of the most quoted books of the New Testament in the early Christian literature, as the first book in the traditional order of books in the New Testament, and as one frequently read and quoted in Christian liturgy and worship until the present, it has exerted great influence on the historical and theological understanding of Jesus. This course will (1) overview the content of the Gospel of Matthew with attention to its distinctive literary characteristics (including its relationship to the other Synoptic Gospels, its five major discourses, and its complex use of the Old Testament), (2) observe the major theological themes and concepts of the Gospel of Matthew and how they function within its narrative, (3) and consider some of the exegetical and interpretive debates related to research of the Gospel of Matthew.

この授業科目の目標は（1）マタイによる福音書の内容について総合的に理解し、（2）マタイによる福音書の主要な物語的かつ神学的なテーマ及び概念を歴史背景及び思想的背景から理解し、（3）マタイによる福音書の箇所又はテーマを研究する。

イエスの行いと教えの物語を通して、マタイによる福音書はイスラエルが待ち望んでいたメシア及びすべての民族に神の国をもたらす救い主としてのイエスという複雑な描写を提供する。二番目に長い福音書、教父文書において最も頻繁に引用される書物の一つ、新約聖書の伝統的な配列においては新約聖書の最初の書、現在に至るまでキリスト教の典礼や礼拝の中で頻繁に読まれる書として、マタイによる福音書はイエスの歴史的かつ神学的な理解に非常に大きな影響を与えてきた。この科目は、（１）他の共観福音書との関係、五つの談話、旧約聖書の複雑な使用を含め、マタイによる福音書の文学的特徴を注目しながら、マタイによる福音書の内容を概観し、（２）マタイによる福音書の主要な神学的なテーマ及び概念とその物語上での機能を考察し、（３）マタイによる福音書の研究と関連する主要な釈義的・解釈的議論を考える。
