In this course, we aim to acquire a basic viewpoint of religious studies and gain a critical perspective on contemporary issues concerning religion and culture. And we will assume a reflective stance on the religious themes lying in our ordinary surroundings.
The question "What is religion?" is a fundamental concern that motivates religious studies, yet it has no definitive answer. If we cannot definitively determine what constitutes "religion," defining the distinct "secular" cultural sphere becomes equally challenging. Even the lifestyles of those who identify as "non-religious," free from clear affiliations or confessions, cannot remain entirely untouched by the religiosity permeating diverse cultural phenomena. Although the image of modernity as a secular age remains firmly entrenched, problematic concerns about multicultural situations and church-state relations frequently surface in many societies today. We will examine how "religion" appears in today's world and what kind of influence it imposes on our lives from various angles.

宗教学の基本的なものの見方を身につけ、宗教と文化に関わる現代の諸論点について理解すること。また、宗教を自らの問題としてとらえ、自身の生活実践に関わる身近な宗教性について反省的に考察できるようになること。これらを目標とします。

「宗教とは何か」という問いは、宗教学を動機づける根本的なテーマである一方、定まった答えをもたないものです。「宗教」が何であるのかを最終的に確定できないとすれば、それとは区別される「世俗的」な文化領域を定義することもまた難しくなります。明確な所属や信仰をもたない「無宗教」を自任する人々の生活態度も、多様な文化的事象のなかに溶け込んだ宗教性とつねに無縁ではありえないでしょう。近代とは世俗的な時代であるとの認識が強固に前提される一方で、政教関係についての懸念がたびたび前景化する今日の社会において、「宗教」はどのような仕方で存在し、私たちの生活にどのような影響を与えているのか、さまざまなテーマに即して検討します。
