This class will focus on the relationship between state and religion in modern society. The institutions of the modern state have developed while confronting the question of how people with different religions can coexist. We will pay special attention to the historical development and current challenges of such concepts and legal systems as "tolerance," "freedom of religion," and "separation of church and state." The goal is for students to acquire this knowledge to consider coexistence with diverse others as citizens of today's world.
First, we will discuss the relationship between religious divides and the development of modern states in Western Christendom. As examples, we will look at the United States and France, which are known for the separation of church and state, as well as other states that are trying to hold religiously diverse population without the separation. We will also cover the case of Japan. We will then discuss Jews in modern world, the problem of cults, conscientious objection to military service, and the phenomenon of modern religious revival.

近現代社会の政教関係―国家と宗教の関係―について、講義を行う。近代国家の制度は、異なる宗教を持つ人々がいかに共存することができるかという難問に対峙しつつ発展した。この授業ではとくに、その中で育まれた「寛容」「宗教の自由」「政教分離」といった概念や法制度について、歴史的展開や現在直面する課題を論じる。受講生はこれらの知識を身につけ、現代社会に生きる一市民として、多様な他者との共存について考察することを目指す。
This class will focus on the relationship between state and religion in modern society. The institutions of the modern state have developed while confronting the question of how people with different religions can coexist. 講義ではまず、西欧キリスト教社会の宗教的分裂と近代国家成立のかかわりを論じ、事例として政教分離国家として特徴的なアメリカとフランス、政教分離ではない形で共存を図る諸国家、そして日本をとりあげる。また、テーマ別講義として、ユダヤ教徒と近代、カルト問題、良心的兵役拒否、現代の宗教復興現象について論じる。
First, we will discuss the relationship between religious divides and the development of modern states in Western Christendom. As examples, we will look at the United States and France, which are known for the separation of church and state, as well as other states that are trying to hold religiously diverse population without the separation. We will also cover the case of Japan. We will then discuss Jews in modern world, the problem of cults, conscientious objection to military service, and the phenomenon of modern religious revival.
