【Course Objectives】

This course surveys the history of Christian music from Gregorian chant to the close of the Renaissance, viewed through the lenses of monasteries and cathedrals. The foundations of Western music were formed between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and much of the underlying theory was developed by musicians working in monastic and cathedral settings. Practices such as musical notation, theories of meter and rhythm, and ways of setting words of praise to music were shaped through countless insights and innovations cultivated within the church.

The path of this development, however, was far from uniform. New musical styles and ideas repeatedly emerged in response to major upheavals: monastic reform and consolidation, conflicts between the papacy and secular rulers, the Black Death and war, and the Reformation. We will trace the key events of each period and examine what new forms of sacred music arose from them.

A further goal of this course is experiential learning through singing. By singing representative sacred works from each era, students will deepen their understanding in ways that cannot be gained from reading scores or listening to recordings alone. Through performance, we will seek to approach the musical language of prayer as it was lived and heard by people of the past.

【Course Contents】

Here as well is an English version suitable for a syllabus (Course Content / Class Format section):
Each class session will proceed according to the following structure:

First, after providing an overview of the historical period to be covered, we will examine its social background and its relationship to the Christian Church.

Next, we will focus on key churches and monasteries of the period, explaining the music and theoretical ideas that emerged from those institutions.

Finally, we will introduce representative composers and works, and students will sing selected excerpts in order to grasp the essential character of “the music of that era” within the context of Christian worship and religious life.

【履修にあたって求められる能力 / Abilities Required to Take the Course】

楽譜を初見で読める能力は不要であるが、楽譜を見慣れていると、授業内容を理解しやすい。授業中に、当時の修道士や聖歌隊員のように、オリジナル譜を見ながら少しだけ歌うという試みも予定しているので(もちろん現代譜も配布する)、歌うことの好きな人は大歓迎である/The ability to sight-read sheet music is not required, but familiarity with musical notation will make it easier to understand the course content. During class, we plan to attempt singing a little from the original scores, just like the monks and choir members of that era (modern scores will of course be distributed as well), so those who enjoy singing are most welcome.
