The goal of this course is for students to understand the history of Christianity in Japan which started with the missionary endeavors of Xavier, and its historical development up to the contemporary era, while capturing the circumstances of each period.
In this course, students will delve into the history of Christianity in Japan from the arrival of Xavier in Japan to the present day: It will span the periods of early Japanese Christianity and hidden Christianity, and the progression from modern times through wartime to the present. The course will offer an examination of the history of Christianity from the cultural and social perspectives, as well as the ecclesiastical and theological aspects. It will direct attention not only to Protestantism but also to Catholicism and Orthodoxy Christianity.

ザビエルの布教から始まる日本のキリスト教の歴史について、それぞれの時代状況を捉えつつ、現代に至る過程を理解する。
The goal of this course is for students to understand the history of Christianity in Japan which started with the missionary endeavors of Xavier, and its historical development up to the contemporary era, while capturing the circumstances of each period.
日本におけるキリスト教の歴史を、ザビエルの来日から今日に至るまで、すなわち、キリシタン時代と潜伏時代、そして近代から戦時下を経て現代へと至る過程を学ぶ。教会・神学的側面とともに文化的・社会的側面からその歴史を捉えるものとし、プロテスタントだけでなく、カトリック、正教会にも注目する。
