The aim of this seminar is to learn about the prevailing scholarly concerns and approaches in Japanese scholarship through the close reading of Japanese-language scholarship, and to acquire the skills necessary to understand research perspectives on the ancient Mediterranean world and its neighboring regions. In addition, through these activities, participants are expected to develop the ability to define their own research topics and to collect and organize relevant scholarly literature.
Each student will choose a Japanese-language research article related to their interests, based on books and articles they read in advance during summer break. They will prepare a written summary and present it in class. By analyzing the author’s intentions and reasoning, and examining how primary sources support the argument, students will learn how to write a research paper and identify viable research topics. Additionally, by exploring how the author situates their work within broader scholarly trends, students will gain an understanding of the importance of academic writing as a scholarly practice.

夏休み期間中に日本語論文を10本、あるいいは研究書3冊以上を選んで精読し，ノートを作成しておくこと。また、読んだ文献について文献リストをつくっておくこと。初回の授業時に発表する論文を決定する。報告にあたっては、配付資料を用意する。他の学生の発表時には、該当する時代、地域、テーマについてあらかじめ調べておくこと。これらの作業には最低2時間、発表時には相当の時間を要する。

日本語文献の精読を通じて、日本の歴史学界における問題関心のありか、問題設定の立て方を学び、古代地中海世界および隣接地域研究における研究の考え方を理解するためのスキルを獲得することを目的とする。また、これらの作業を通じて、みずからの研究テーマを決定し、関連研究論文の収集や整理をする力を身につけることを目的とする。

受講生各人が、みずからの興味に関連した日本語論文を、夏休み中にあらかじめ読んだ書籍および論文を参考に選択し、それについてレジュメを準備し報告をおこなう。論文執筆の意図や論理を読み取り、論証のために史料がどのように使われているかを学ぶことによって、論文の執筆の仕方を学ぶとともに、研究テーマをどのように見つけていくかを学ぶ。また、著者が自身の論文を学界動向の中にどのように位置づけているかを読み取ることから、論文を執筆するという作業の意味についても知ることになる。
