Students will acquire fundamental knowledge about medieval Japanese history, and refine their ability to accurately read and understand academic papers and historical materials. In the second year, students will first become accustomed to classical Chinese historical materials, learn how to use basic dictionaries and encyclopedias, and acquire the ability to properly read literature such as new publications and complete histories.
(1) Students will engage in group reading of Azumakagami, the historical record of the Kamakura Shogunate. This year, students will read articles about the Jokyu War (jōkyū no ran) in 1221.
(2) Students will join group reading of the textbook.
(3) Students will create reports aimed at writing a preliminary and graduation thesis.
In proceeding with (1), students will (after dividing into groups, depending on the number of people) nominate one person in charge of reports, go through the original texts of historical materials, research the meanings of terms and phrases, and perform translation into modern Japanese language. After making preparations for examining issues and related academic papers and historical materials, students will make reports in the seminar. Participants will engage in Q&As and discussions.
In proceeding with (2), all participants will spend 20-30 minutes to discuss one chapter in each session, based on the reading of the relevant chapter and a comment paper prepared in advance.
For (3), students will create their own reports as homework for the long break.
In addition to conducting a sub-seminar for preparation of seminar reports, the course will help students deepen understanding of the seminars by visiting historical sites and museums and by holding seminar camps (once or twice scheduled per year) as mandatory participation by the students. Study sessions on running-form Chinese characters may also be held, at the request of the participants.

授業の初回に指示する。参加者は自身の報告準備（報告は各学期少なくとも1回）に加えて，毎回予習してくることを前提とする。事前に，いわゆる「通史」ものを読んで，中世，特に鎌倉時代に関する基礎知識を確認しておくとよい（「名著」は多数あるが，比較的入手しやすいものとして，石井進『鎌倉幕府』中公文庫，五味文彦『鎌倉と京』講談社学術文庫）、近藤成一『鎌倉幕府と朝廷』（岩波新書）。
史料読解の訓練のために「古文書」の講義を履修することが望ましい。日本中世史関係の「史学講義」も可能な限り履修してほしい。日本中世史を専攻するという自分の専門性への自覚をもってほしい。教養のありがたさというのは，ある程度専門性を深めた後になってようやく理解されるものだと思う。私自身は皆さんに教養をもってほしいと思うし，そのためにもいろいろな授業を積極的にとってほしいが，それが上っ面の「お勉強」にならないためにも，自分の思考の基礎となる専門性というものを持ってほしいと願っている。

本演習では中世前期の史料を素材にして歴史の学び方を修得する。3年生用の演習Ｈ15と連携する工夫を行う｡
日本中世史について基礎的な知識を身につけるとともに，論文や史料などを正確に読み，理解する能力を磨く。2年生の段階では，まず漢文の史料に慣れるとともに，基本的な辞書・事典の使い方，新書・通史レヴェルの文献をきちんと読む力を身につける。
Students will acquire fundamental knowledge about medieval Japanese history, and refine their ability to accurately read and understand academic papers and historical materials. In the second year, students will first become accustomed to classical Chinese historical materials, learn how to use basic dictionaries and encyclopedias, and acquire the ability to properly read literature such as new publications and complete histories.
①鎌倉幕府の法令である「御成敗式目」，およびその歴史書である『吾妻鏡』を輪読する。
②論文輪読をおこなう。
③予備論文・卒業論文作成に向けてレポートを作成する。
①の進め方は，全員毎回予習して，事前に小レポートを提出するほか，関連する論点の報告者を決め論点報告をしてもらう。当日はそれに基づき，参加者で質疑・検討を行う。
②の進め方は，毎回45分程度を用いて，毎回1章ずつ，参加者全員が事前に読み，コメントペーパーを用意してきて，それをもとに議論を行う。
③については，長期休み中の課題として各自レポート作成を行う。
ゼミ報告の準備のためのサブゼミを行うほか，演習の理解を深めるために，史跡・博物館の巡検やゼミ合宿（年1，2回の予定）なども実施するので，履修者は必ず参加すること。参加者の希望に応じて，随時，崩し字などに関する勉強会も開く。
