The goal of this course is to acquire knowledge, skills, and methods for deciphering historical documents of medieval Japan, and through this, to develop historical thinking skills in preparation for writing the graduation thesis.
The course will be conducted in a group reading format using ancient documents from medieval Japan (mainly from the 13th to 14th centuries) as texts. The text will be a collection of typified documents from the “Zenshoji Documents” deposited in the Kyoto Gaku-Rekisaikan, which provide an overview of the local people's activities in the manor houses of the Kamakura period.
Reports will be given in rotation by groups of several members assigned in advance. The assigned historical materials will be read and translated into contemporary language.
Each time, the group in charge will report to the class with a resume prepared by referring to dictionaries, references, and related historical documents for several historical materials assigned to them.

割り当てられた史料の読解には多くの時間を費やします。自宅での予習復習のほか、グループ内で予習復習をしなければ、レジュメの作成は間に合いません。グループ内で事前に予定を調整し、最低週１～2回は授業時間外に集まり、報告に向けた準備をする必要があります。図書館のグループ学習室などを活用してください。また、本演習を履修するにあたって中世史料読解のために「古文書」の講義を履修することが望ましい。

本演習では中世前期の史料を素材にして歴史の学び方を修得する。
日本中世の史料を解読するための知識・技術・方法を習得することを目標とし、それを通じて卒業論文の執筆に向けて歴史的な思考能力を養うことを目指します。

日本中世（主に13～14世紀）の古文書をテキストにして輪読形式ですすめます。テキストは、鎌倉時代の荘園現地における民衆の動向がわかる京都府立京都学・歴彩館寄託の「禅定寺文書」を活字化した史料集を使用します。
報告は、あらかじめ振り分けた数名のグループが輪番で担当していきます。割り当てた史料の読みくだし・現代語訳などをおこないます。
毎回、担当グループが、割り当てた史料数点を辞書や参考文献・関連史料を参照しつつ作成したレジュメを授業で報告してもらいます。
