Students will enhance their ability to read and analyze primary sources and academic papers in Japanese medieval history. With a focus on preparing for their graduation theses, each student will explore and develop their own research theme.
At the junior (third-year) level, the goal is for students to collect and read primary sources related to their themes (referencing previous scholarship) while developing the skills to engage with academic literature. In particular, students are expected to become capable of distinguishing between rigorous academic publications and non-academic sources.
Course Content and Methodology
Reading and Analysis of Key Literature:
We will conduct a close reading of Yoshihiko Amino's Chusei Shoen no Yoso (Aspects of Medieval Estates; using the Iwanami Bunko edition) and examine the primary sources utilized in the book. In each session, designated presenters will prepare a handout (resumé) summarizing the content and analyzing the author's methodology, including the logical structure, use of evidence, and interpretation of primary sources. This will be followed by a group discussion involving all participants.
To write a high-quality thesis, one must understand how a scholarly paper is constructed. Through the process of summarizing excellent academic works, presenters are expected to learn the "art of academic writing."
Independent Research Development:
Students will confirm their individual research themes and proceed to collect and organize relevant literature and primary sources. Participants will be required to create a bibliography as the course progresses. Students must also submit research reports during long vacations. The specific presentation schedule will be finalized during the first session.
Guidance and Extracurricular Activities
Office Hours and Consultations: To prepare for the preliminary thesis, individual meetings will be held once or twice a term during office hours. Students are expected to develop their research plans and read specialized books and articles tailored to their specific topics.
Fieldwork and Seminars: To deepen understanding of the subject, we will conduct field trips to historical sites and museums, as well as seminar retreats.

授業の初回に指示する。参加者は自身の報告準備（報告は各学期少なくとも1回）に加えて，毎回予習してくることを前提とする。事前に，いわゆる「通史」ものを読んで，中世，特に鎌倉時代に関する基礎知識を確認しておくとよい。比較的入手しやすいものとして，近藤成一『鎌倉幕府と朝廷』（岩波新書）、佐藤雄基『御成敗式目』（中央公論新社）。
史料読解の訓練のために「古文書」の講義を履修することが望ましい。日本中世史関係の「史学講義」も可能な限り履修してほしい。日本中世史を専攻するという自分の専門性への自覚をもってほしい。教養のありがたさというのは，ある程度専門性を深めた後になってようやく理解されるものだと思う。私自身は皆さんに教養をもってほしいと思うし，そのためにもいろいろな授業を積極的にとってほしいが，それが上っ面の「お勉強」にならないためにも，自分の思考の基礎となる専門性というものを持ってほしいと願っている。

本演習では中世前期の史料を素材にして歴史の学び方を修得する。
日本中世史の史料・論文の読解能力を高めるとともに，卒業論文の制作との関連を重視して，各自の研究テーマを探究する。
3年生の段階では，自分の研究テーマに関連する史料を集めて（先行研究を参考にしながら）読むとともに，学術的な論文を集めて読む力を身につける（特に学術的な手続きを踏まえた文献とそうではない文献の区別ができるようになる）ことを目指す。

①網野善彦『中世荘園の様相』（岩波文庫版を利用）を輪読するとともに、同書で利用されている史料を読む。
各回、著作の輪読をおこなう。毎回,指定された報告者が，課題文献について，内容要約，論述・論証・史料解釈（史料操作）の仕方についてレジュメを作成して報告する。そのうえで，参加者全員で討議を行う。
「論文を書く」ためには「論文の書き方」が分からなければならない。報告者にはぜひ優れた「論文」をレジュメに要約することを通じて「論文の書き方」を学んでほしい。
②各自の研究テーマを確認し，それに沿って，関係文献・史料を収集整理し（機会をみて「文献目録」を作成してもらう），各自の研究テーマを深めていく。長期休み中にレポートを作成してもらう。具体的な報告の計画については，初回の授業で決める。
また,予備論文作成に向けて,オフィスアワーに面談を学期中1,2回開催する。各自,研究計画を作成し,各自のテーマに沿った研究書・論文を読むことになる。
演習の理解を深めるために，史跡・博物館の巡検やゼミ合宿なども実施する。
