The objective of this seminar is to learn about the history of folklore studies and to acquire the perspectives and methods of folklore research.
First, students will deepen their understanding of the history, perspectives, and methods of folklore studies through lectures. Next, they will survey various themes within folklore studies that focus on living culture. Students will form groups of two to three members, select a theme based on their interests, and compile research on that theme using literature and, where appropriate, fieldwork. They will then present their findings to the rest of the class. Next, we will survey the lives and scholarship of folklorists active during the founding and developmental periods of Japanese folklore studies. Students will form groups of 2-3, select one folklorist based on their interests, and prepare presentations to share information about that individual's life and scholarship with the class. Finally, we will hold a concluding discussion and review the methodology for preparing the summer vacation assignment report (a report on a folklore exhibition at a local museum or archive).

民俗学の歴史について学び、民俗学の視点・方法を修得する。
The objective of this seminar is to learn about the history of folklore studies and to acquire the perspectives and methods of folklore research.
最初に民俗学の歴史・視点・方法について講義を通して理解を深める。次に、生活文化を対象とする民俗学の諸テーマを概観する。受講生は２～３人のグループに分かれ、関心に応じてテーマを選び、文献と、場合によってはフィールドワークを取り入れてテーマについてまとめ、その成果を他の受講生に伝える発表を行う。続いて、日本の民俗学の草創期・展開期に活躍した民俗学者の人生と学問を概観する。受講生は２～３人のグループに分かれ、関心に応じて一人の民俗学者を選び、その人物の人と学問について他の受講生に伝える発表を行う。最後にまとめの議論を行い、夏季休暇中の課題レポート（地域の資料館・博物館の民俗展示レポート）の作成方法をおさえる。
