By conducting actual fieldwork on the lifestyles, societies, and cultures of people rooted in communities, and by collecting and empirically elucidating data, students will learn theories and methods of regional studies and cultural environment studies.
Based on prior learning in classes, the course will schedule a 3-day, 2-night program during the summer vacation period or spring semester to search for regional topics, with Tsukechi-cho (tentative) in Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, as the field site. The course will conduct a preliminary survey based on participants' interests, and will advance preparations for the main survey to be conducted during the summer vacation period or the fall semester.

フィールドワークI1（春学期）の受講者は、続けてフィールドワークI2（秋学期）を受講し、同じ調査地での本調査を実施して報告書をまとめることが強く推奨される。この科目は「その他登録」で、最初の授業時に登録申請をする必要があるので、履修希望者はかならず出席すること。ここで履修申し込みをすると、秋も自動的に履修登録される。
フィールドワークを実施することを考慮し、履修希望者が多数の場合はおおむね20名程度に選考することもある。
地域に根ざした人々の生活、社会、文化について実際に現地フィールドワークを行い、データを収集して実証的に解明することで、地域研究・文化環境学の理論と方法を習得する。

授業での事前学習を踏まえ、夏季休業もしくは春学期中に２泊３日の予定で、岐阜県中津川市付知町（予定）をフィールドにして、地域の課題を探り、各自の興味関心をもとに予備調査を実施し、夏期休業もしく秋学期中に実施する本調査のための準備を進める。
