As the second Trump administration enters its second year, the political situation in the Middle East has been rapidly growing more unstable, started by Israel’s invasion of Gaza since October 7, 2023, and the attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States in July 2025 (the so-called “Twelve-Day War”), among other developments. This course places particular emphasis on Iran and aims to equip students with the analytical frameworks and critical methods necessary to examine independently the current conditions of the Middle East through several media and to assess its possible future trajectories.
Since the early twentieth century, Iran was placed under the monopolistic control of British oil interests, and in the post–Second World War period it was compelled to assume the role of a “gendarme” supporting United States policy in the Middle East. Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iran–U.S. relations have become one of the central aporias in the Middle Eastern politics, and at present tensions with Israel and the United States-—both of which seek regime change in Iran—-have escalated to an unprecedented level.
In this course, the lecturer will introduce the fundamental perspectives of “Iranian Area Studies,” encompassing geography, modern and contemporary history, current affairs analysis, and fieldwork of rural cities, and will also provide timely commentary on recent developments in Iran and the Middle East in response to changing circumstances.
In the latter part of the course, students will view several works of post-revolutionary Iranian cinema, a long-standing area of the lecturer’s particular interest, in order to deepen their understanding of the realities of Iranian society--both rural and urban--through visual materials.

2期目のトランプ政権が2年目を迎えた現在、2023年10月7日以来のイスラエルのガザ侵攻、2025年の7月のイスラエルおよびアメリカによるイラン攻撃（いわゆる「12日間戦争」など、中東地域の政治状況は急激に不安定の度合いを増している。本講義では特にイランに焦点を当てつつ、中東情勢の現状と将来あり得べき姿について様々なメディアを通じて自ら主体的に考えていくための方法を獲得することを目標とする。

イランは20世紀の初頭からイギリスの石油利権独占下に置かれ、第二次大戦後はアメリカの中東政策を支える｢憲兵｣としての役割を強いられた。1979年のイスラーム革命以降イラン･米国関係は中東政治の最大のアポリアの一つとなり、現在はイランの体制転換を望むイスラエル及びアメリカとの緊張関係がこれまでになく昂まっている。
本講義では担当教員が専攻してきた｢イラン地域研究｣（地理学、近現代史、現状分析、フィールドワークなど）の基本的な所見を紹介し、また特にイランおよび中東の現状について情勢に応じて適宜解説を試みる。
また講義の後半では担当教員が特に関心を寄せてきた革命後のイラン映画などを幾つか鑑賞することで、映像資料から読み取れるイラン社会の実相についても考察を深めたい。
