In this class, students learn the characteristics of the basic historical materials of modern Japanese history and develop their reading comprehension.
Specifically, the goal of the class is to cultivate the ability to read and understand modern Japanese newspaper historical materials.
Newspapers are an important source of historical material in modern Japan. It is still an effective information medium for grasping the situation of the same period, but such characteristics can also be used in the past. In order to recognize the multifaceted political, economic, and social events of modern Japan, it is possible to grasp the various aspects of the time by referring to the pages of newspapers that have reported these trends diachronically. However, in addition to being an information medium, newspapers are historical materials defined by the value recognition and conditions of the times. When reading newspapers, it is necessary to pay attention to their historical nature. From what position, on what subject, and with what brushwork is the writer reporting? In this class, students will acquire basic knowledge about newspapers, understand their characteristics as historical materials, and develop their ability to read and understand historical materials by actually touching the pages of newspapers and interpreting the contents reported in them.

日本近代史の基本的な史料について、その特徴を学び、読解力を養うための授業である。
具体的には、近代日本の新聞史料を対象に、その読解力を養うことが授業の目標となる。

近代日本の史料として、新聞は重要な素材である。現在でも同時代の状況を把握する際に有効な情報媒体であるが、そうした特性は過去においても活用できる。近代日本の政治・経済・社会といった多面的な事象を認識する際には、それらの動向を通時的に報道してきた新聞の紙面を参照することで、当時の諸相を把握することが可能となる。もっとも、新聞は情報媒体であるという属性に加え、当時の価値認識や時代状況に規定された史料でもある。新聞を読み解く際には、こうした史料的性格に留意することが必要である。書き手が、どのような立場から、どのような対象を、どのような筆致で報じているのか。本授業では、実際に新聞紙面に触れ、そこで報じられている内容を読み解く作業を通して、新聞に関する基本的な知識を身につけ、その史料的性格を理解するとともに、新聞史料への読解力を養っていく。
