To be able to explain the realities of urban society in Roman provincial cities and the nature of Roman imperial rule based on the Greek cities during the Roman Empire.
To be able to relativize other similar historical events and contemporary phenomena, through comparisons with examples from Roman imperial society and Greek cities.
This course will examine the intersection of the two major cultures of the ancient Western world, Rome and Greek, using Greek cities that existed in Asia Minor (present Turkey) during the high Roman Empire as case studies, while utilizing literary and epigraphic sources. The discussion will cover various aspects such as politics, economy, society, and culture. In the latter part of the course, we will explore existing archaeological sites and provide explanations on specific topics based on these sites.

西洋古代に関して、高校世界史レベルの基礎知識を有することが望ましい。
資料の配付などに「Canvas LMS」を使用するので、PC持参が望ましいが、その限りではない。
ローマ帝政期のギリシア都市をもとに、ローマの属州都市社会の実態やローマによる帝国支配のありようを説明することができる。
また、ローマ帝国社会やギリシア都市の事例との比較を通じて、他の類する世界史的事象や現代の事象を相対化することができる。

本科目は、最盛期ローマ帝国下の小アジア（現在のトルコ）に多数存在したギリシア都市を事例に、文学的史料、碑文史料などを利用しつつ、ローマとギリシアという西洋古代世界における二大文化の交錯のありようを、政治、経済、社会、文化などから多角的に論じる。後半の遺跡探訪では、現存する遺跡を軸に特定のトピックについて解説する。
