One can explain the nature of slavery within Roman imperial society.
Furthermore, through comparison with Roman imperial society, one can contextualise other similar world historical phenomena and contemporary events.
This course examines slaves and freedmen within the society of the ancient Roman Empire. From a world historical perspective, ancient Roman society was founded upon a large-scale system of slavery. Although slaves and freedmen are often perceived as a monolithic group, the reality was diverse, and significant disparities existed among them. This course will discuss the nature of slavery in ancient Rome and the lives of its slaves from various perspectives, offering comparisons with systems such as modern black slavery.

西洋古代に関して、高校世界史レベルの基礎知識を有することが望ましい。
資料の配付などに「Canvas LMS」を使用するので、PC持参が望ましいが、その限りではない。
ローマ帝国社会における奴隷制のありようを説明することができる。
また、ローマ帝国社会との比較を通じて、他の類する世界史的事象や現代の事象を相対化することができる。

本科目は、古代ローマ帝国社会における奴隷・解放奴隷について論じる。古代ローマ人の社会は、世界史的にみても、大規模な奴隷制に立脚していた。しばしば、一枚岩的に理解されがちな奴隷や解放奴隷だが、その実態は多様であり、彼らのあいだにも格差があったことが判明する。本科目では、近代黒人奴隷制などとも比較可能な、この古代ローマの奴隷制や彼ら奴隷たちの生について、様座な観点から解説していく。
