The lecture titled "What was the Viking society?" focuses on the Norse groups known as the Vikings, who were active across a vast maritime and riverine space from the Americas to Central Asia during the 8th to 11th centuries. Its goal is to develop historical thinking skills by analyzing the characteristics of pre-modern European society through diverse historical sources and research findings.
This lecture provides an overview of the Viking society based on specific historical sources and recent research. While the Vikings are often regarded as savage pirates, studies over the past few decades have revealed a wide range of activities beyond their aggressive exploits, including trade, colonization, diplomatic negotiations, and state-building. Here, we will reconstruct the unique society created by the Vikings through themes such as warfare, commerce, daily life, craftsmanship, art, gender roles, and etc.

「ヴァイキング社会論」と題する本講義では、８−１１世紀にアメリカ大陸から中央アジアにかけての広大な空間で活動したヴァイキングと呼ばれる北欧人集団を事例とし、前近代ヨーロッパ社会の特徴を抽出することで、多様な史料と研究成果を用いた歴史学的な思考を身につけることを目標とする。

本講義では、ヴァイキングの社会とはどのようなものであったのかを、具体的な史料と最新の研究に基づき概観する。我々は一般的にヴァイキングを野蛮な海賊と見做しがちであるが、ここ数十年の研究は、そうした攻撃的な側面のみならず、交易、植民、外交交渉、国家形成など、多様な側面を明らかにしてきた。ここでは、そのようなさまざまな活動を行うヴァイキングが作り上げてきた独自の社会を、戦闘、商業、日常生活、手工業、芸術、ジェンダーなどのテーマを通じて再構成する。
