The goal of this course is for students to understand the historical processes through which pre-modern textual sources have been transmitted to the present day, while simultaneously cultivating a philological approach.
How have the works or words of historical figures—encountered so casually in our daily lives—traversed the centuries to reach us today? How was this possible in an age that predated not only computers and smartphones but even a single sheet of paper?
This course explores the 2,000-year history of textual transmission in Western society, focusing on the institutional frameworks of each era and the meticulous labor of the scribes. In the latter half of the course, we will survey the methodologies used to reconstruct texts that were lost or corrupted during transmission, as well as the analytical techniques employed to determine authorship, geographical origins, and dates of composition.

前近代の文字史料がどのような歴史的過程を経て現代まで伝承されてきたのか理解しつつ、文献学的思考を涵養することを目標とします。

みなさんが普段何気なく接している、歴史上の人物の作品や言葉は、いかにして時代を超え、現代を生きる私たちの手元にまで伝わったのでしょうか。パソコンやスマホはおろか、薄紙一枚すら存在しなかった時代から、一体どうやって？
本講義では、西洋社会おける、およそ2000年にわたるテクスト（文字史料）の伝承の歴史について、各時代における制度的背景や写字生（本を書き写す人）の営みに着目しながら学びます。講義の後半では、伝承の過程で失われた、あるいは「改竄」されたテクストを復元するための方法論や、著者、編纂地、成立時期の推定手法などについても概観します。
