１．This lecture will examine a topic of consumer society and women's agency in commercial transaction from the late-nineteenth and turn-of-the-century Britain, particularly focusing on women's consuming practice and its impact on an advanced capitalist society.
２．Analyze key issues from both historical and critical perspectives, and share your thoghts.
３．Develop your self-motivated research attitude: your regular class contribution will be highly assessed, and preliminary acquisition of high-school-level World History and English reading skill will be required.
This course will explore the development of British consumer society from the 1880s' to the 1910s', from a gender-history perspective. We will examine how the transformation of ideologies concerning women's gender roles and public and private sheres, affected gendered commercial world. We will focus mainly on middle classes. Think about the continuity and change.
In this course, I will show how to conduct a historical research through reading secondary materials, reference books and primary materials including official documents, journals and newspapers, and unpublished sources.

高校世界史テキスト程度の知識を前提として講義を行うため、不足部分は各自予習のうえ受講すること。
講義では、主に英文の一次資料や研究書の一部を原語で（和訳せず）用います。したがって、西洋・イギリス史研究に必要な水準の英文読解力が必要です。なお、講義部分と並行してその場で配付した資料に基づき、意見交換の記録や小レポートを作成するなど毎回の授業参加に重きをおいた専門性の高い授業になります。参考文献など関連情報については授業時に適宜指示します。
英文読解に必要な方は、英和辞書もしくは英英辞書（辞書に特化したもの。なお、授業内でのスマホまたは類するdeviceの使用は原則禁止。）授業時間外の連絡等でLMSを利用するためPC等閲覧用機器。
25分以内の遅刻および早退は3回で１回の欠席とみなします。遅刻した場合、すぐに申し出ること。授業内でのスマホまたは類するdeviceの使用は原則禁止（許可したときのみ可）、迷惑行為とみなし平常点の失点とします。
１．１９世紀末から世紀転換期イギリスにおける消費文化と女性のエージェンシーについて探求する。
２．具体的な史料と研究に基づき概観し、歴史学的観点から主要問題について批判的に考え、意見を述べることができる。

ジェンダー史の視座から１８８０年代から１９１０年代イギリスにおける消費文化の発展を「女性と買いもの」をキーワードとして探求する。資本主義社会が発展するなかで、女性の役割の変化やジェンダーおよび公私のイデオロギーがどのように商業のジェンダー化にかかわっていたか、現在とのつながりや変容も視野にいれて考えていく。ミドルクラスの人々を中心に扱う。
英文の1次史料や研究文献（2次資料）を実際に読み解き、視覚・映像資料も活用する。
1.研究書（英語）、2.公的文書・雑誌・未刊行文献などの一次史料、3.視覚・映像資料、事典等 これら３種類の文献・史料を読み解きながらトピックについての理解と考察を深めます。
