What is "Eastern Europe"? The idea of "Eastern Europe" became general during the Cold War period, and if the eastern part of the Iron Curtain simply meant "Eastern Europe", it would no longer exist. However, the "Eastern Europe" is still perceived as a regional category with some images. When we distinguish it from "Western Europe", we would image its "backwardness". What is the "backwardness"? Who judges it backward? Through considering the idea of "Eastern Europe", we will reconsider the concepts we perceive as universal in the contemporary era.
We will learn about the history of the region which is called "Eastern Europe".
The main target is the nation-states which were part of the territory of the Habsburg monarchy, especially Czechia and Slovakia.
We will also compare relating concepts "Central/Middle Europe", "Central and Eastern Europe" and "Eastern Central Europe".

「東欧」とは何だろうか。「東欧」概念が定着したのは東西冷戦期だが、単に鉄のカーテンの東を東欧と呼ぶのなら、東欧はもう存在しないことになる。しかし、なおも「東欧」は、一定のイメージを伴うまとまった地域単位として捉えられている。あえて「西欧」と区別して「東欧」を考えるとき、そのイメージの核の一つを構成するのは「後進性」であろう。果たして、「後進性」とは何を指すのか。誰がそれを遅れていると見なすのか。「東欧」という概念の考察を通じて、現在普遍的とされている諸理念の再考を目指す。

「東欧」と呼ばれる地域の歴史を中心に扱う。
ただし、「東欧」全域をカバーすることは困難であるため、旧ハプスブルク君主国領、とりわけチェコとスロヴァキアを主な考察対象とする。
関連する「中欧」、「中・東欧」、「東中欧」概念との比較も行う。
