The aim of this module is to deepen understanding of the question how the English state government transformed over the course of the transition to the modern period, focusing on the 'urbanisation' which gathered pace throughout the 'long-eighteenth century' from the late seventeenth to early nineteenth century and roles which laws played in its process.
In long eighteenth-century England, there were growing concerns on the part of local society about different challenges of urbanisation, and introducing parliamentary acts as a means to address them became increasingly important. This module firstly outlines this process. Afterwards, through cases of individual towns and localities, the module also explores the detailed process in which they attempted to introduce the acts, and considers relationships between laws, the localities and state in the period.

本授業は、「長い１８世紀」と呼ばれる１７世紀後半から１９世紀初頭までの間のイングランドの地域社会において進行した「都市化」や、都市化における法律の役割に焦点を当て、近代へ移行する過渡期に国家の統治機構がどのような変化を遂げたのかという問題に対する理解を深めることを目的とする。

都市化に伴い噴出した様々な都市問題に対する地域社会の関心が増し、問題を解決するための手段としての法の重要性が増す、その背景をおさえたうえで、個々の地域や都市における法の獲得や施行の具体的過程を解説し、法と地域社会、国家の間の関係性を考察する。
