This class provides lectures on the history of East Asia and Eurasia, primarily from the 16th century to the present. It aims to explore the political, religious, and international developments in East Asia and Eurasia during the modern period, with special reference to the dynamics of the "Tibetan Buddhist sphere" that extends across Central Eurasia.
Tibetan Buddhism, which emerged and developed in Tibet, expanded across the Eurasian continent, transcending individual countries, nationalities, and empires such as Tibet, the Himalayan regions, Mongolia, Manchuria, North-Western China, and Russia. The history of this Tibetan Buddhist sphere offers important perspectives that provide new insights into both Asian and world history by moving beyond the framework of national histories.
This class focuses on the history of Tibet and the Tibetan Buddhist sphere, with special attention to the challenges and agendas these regions faced during the modern period.This class also addresses Tibet's pre-modern history, culture, customs, and society as necessary.

東アジア・ユーラシアの歴史を主に16世紀から現在まで概説していきます。特に内陸部の中央ユーラシアに広がる「チベット仏教圏」の動態に注目しつつ、近現代東アジア・ユーラシアの政治・宗教・国際関係の展開について理解を深めることを目的とします。
This class provides lectures on the history of East Asia and Eurasia, primarily from the 16th century to the present. It aims to explore the political, religious, and international developments in East Asia and Eurasia during the modern period, with special reference to the dynamics of the "Tibetan Buddhist sphere" that extends across Central Eurasia.
ユーラシア大陸に民族・国家・帝国を横断して拡大した「チベット仏教圏」（チベット，ヒマラヤ，モンゴル，中国西北・東北，ロシアの一部を含む）の盛衰は，アジア史・ユーラシア史の理解のため，そして特定の民族史・一国史に収斂することのない豊かな世界史像を考えるために，有効かつ重要な題材となります。本講義では，特に16世紀から現在に至るまでの，チベットおよび「チベット仏教圏」の歴史を解説し，これらの地域が近代以降に直面した課題を考察していきます。その内容を理解する上での前提として、前近代史、チベットの習慣・文化・社会についても適宜説明を加えます。
