In today’s world, 90 percent of the population lives in cities. This course aims to deepen understanding of the relationship between cities and human societies and of the factors that attract people to urban centers by examining the processes of urbanization and the development of urban culture in the ancient Mediterranean world from multiple perspectives, with a particular emphasis on the Aegean region.
This course explores the relationships between cities and people in the ancient Mediterranean world from multiple perspectives, with a particular focus on the Aegean region. It mainly emphasizes polis society, examining its forms and features from the earliest times through Late Antiquity.

今日の世界において、人口の9割が都市に居住している。本講義では、古代地中海世界、とくにエーゲ海域における都市化のプロセスと都市文化の展開について多様な側面から概観することから、都市と人間との関わりについて学び、人々が都市にひきつけられる現象について理解を深めることを目標とする。

古代地中海世界、とりわけエーゲ海域における都市と人々とのかかわりについて多面的に考察していく。とくにポリス社会に焦点を当てて最初期から古代末期までそのあり方について考察する。
