The lecture titled "Intellectual history of runic scripts" focuses on the emergence, use, and reception of these Germanic letters from the 2nd century to the contemporary world. Its goal is to develop historical thinking skills by analyzing the characteristics of European and global society and ideas through diverse historical sources and research findings.
This lecture provides an overview of the emergence, use, and reception of runic scripts based on specific historical sources and recent research. We commonly tend to regard runes as the script of the Vikings; however, research over the past several decades has revealed the diverse ways in which runic writing has been used at multiple levels from the Germanic period down to the present day. In this course, we examine how runes have been employed in various social contexts over the two thousand years from antiquity to the modern era, organizing these developments in relation to contemporary social structures and intellectual currents. Through themes such as ornamentation, stone monuments, everyday usage, mythology, Nazism, and subculture, we reconstruct the shifting relationships between writing and human society.

「ルーン文字の思想史」と題する本講義では、２世紀にゲルマン社会で発案されたルーン文字が、中世をへて初期近代から現代に至るまで、人間社会においてどのように用いられてきたのかを概観する。ルーン文字という一見マイナーな対象を事例を通じて中世以降のヨーロッパならびに日本を含む世界の社会と思想の特徴を抽出することで、多様な史料と研究成果を用いた歴史学的な思考を身につけることを目標とする。

本講義では、ルーン文字の誕生、機能、受容がどのようなものであったのかを、具体的な史料と最新の研究に基づき概観する。我々は一般的にルーン文字をヴァイキングの文字と見做しがちであるが、ここ数十年の研究は、ゲルマン時代から現代に至るまで様々なレベルにおけるルーン文字の利用実態を明らかにしてきた。ここでは、古代から現代に至るまでの２０００年間に、ルーン文字が社会のどのような場面で用いられてきたのかを、当時の社会や思想との関連で整理し、文字と人間との関係のあり方を、装飾、石碑、日常利用、神話、ナチズム、サブカルチャーなどのテーマを通じて再構成する。
